Georgian President Giorgi Margvelashvili has berated the agreement with Gazprom Export on the transit of Russian gas to Armenia. Margvelashvili’s position was voiced by his spokesman Eka Mishveladze, Georgia-online reports.

“The signing of this agreement worsened the country’s energy sector. It also inflicted harm on the political and economic interests of Georgia. Consequently, we got a worsened situation in different directions, which may cause a number of problems in the future,” she stated.

“The topic of “Gazprom” is something bigger than a business agreement. It relates to the security, foreign policy, geopolitics and only then energy and economics. After signing the agreement with Gazprom, the situation in one of the most important sectors of [our] economy, energy, worsened,” Mishveladze noted.

In her words, Margvelashvili also addressed the parliament and urged the deputies to propose a plan for reducing the risks from the agreement with Russian gas monopolists. “The President urges the parliament to fulfill its constitutional obligation—strengthen the monitoring function and propose a plan for avoiding the expected risks or minimizing the danger,” the Spokesman added.
