YEREVAN. - In terms of law there are no obstacles for holding the parliamentary elections in Armenia on April 2.

Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly (NA), Eduard Sharmazanov, who is also the spokesperson for the ruling Republican Party of Armenia (RPA), told the aforementioned to Armenian News – NEWS.am on Thursday.

In his words, the election day was fixed in accordance with the requirements of the Electoral Code (they were to be held within the period between April 1 and 10, on a non-working day, that is, they could be held either on April 2 or 9).

“I found out yesterday that the Consolidation Party has already decided to express disagreement with holding the elections on that day. If they think there is a problem with the Constitution, let them turn to competent bodies.  There is no other way in democratic countries. But I don’t think there is any problem with law here,” Sharmazanov noted.

Secondly, he noted, different statements were made on that the RPA decided to hold the elections on April 2, since this is the day of the party’s foundation, and they thus want to “make a gift for themselves.”

“This is more than absurd. There are also people who connect this with the four-day April escalation, since the military escalation started on April 2. However, personally for me, April 2 is not as much a day of a starting war but a symbol of national unity and consolidation, the unity of Armenia, Karabakh and Diaspora, since after the Karabakh war of the 90s, on April 2 the Armenian people again proved that they can unite. Accordingly, I think that this criticism has nothing to do with the reality either,” Sharamzanov concluded.
