Senegalese troops have entered Gambia to ensure Adama Barrow assumes power as the country's new president, BBC reports, citing the spokesman of Senegalese armed forces.

According to the source, this happened a few hours after Mr Barrow took the oath of president's office at Gambia's embassy in Dakar.

Adama Barrow, who won the elections in December last year, has been recognized as the country's president by the international community. But strongman Yahya Jammeh, who lost the elections, has refused to accept the results and quit.

Leaders of West African states have threatened to remove Mr Jammeh by force.
