YEREVAN. – The clean nature of the election process in Armenia is important to the European Union (EU), and the Armenian political elite realize that fair and transparent elections are important for the development and the future of the country.
Head of the EU Delegation to Armenia, Ambassador Piotr Świtalski, stated about the aforesaid at a press conference on Tuesday.
In his words, the Armenian authorities have assured that the forthcoming parliamentary election will be better in quality, and voters’ trust in the electoral process will increase.
Świtalski added that successful efforts were made in connection with voter identification technology. He said they are hopeful that this technology will arrive in Armenia soon, so that it can be ready on Election Day (April 2).
As for the matter of installing video cameras at the polling stations, the EU ambassador noted that the applicant, which participated in the respective contest, had offered a price for demanding parameters, whereas these parameters are excessive, considering the available funding.
But Świtalski expressed optimism that a solution will be found, and said the EU will urge to find a reasonable compromise.
The EU diplomat expressed a hope that the matter will be clarified by the end of the week.
