YEREVAN. – One of the most important elements of Armenia's security is a strategic alliance formed by Russia and Armenia. It has a very rich history and tradition, as the Armenian and Russian military have never been on different sides of the trenches, President Serzh Sargsyan said at the meeting with the members of the Armed Forces command.
“However, not a single union can be based on emotions only. This alliance is based on clearly realized common interests and the necessity. It is irreplaceable for the preservation of stability in the region. Armenia will continue in good faith to fulfill all its obligations as an ally in the framework of the Armenian-Russian Union and the Collective Security Treaty Organization,” President Sargsyan said.
He said all have to realize that there are events, actions, performances within CSTO which we do not like, but “either an action, a speech, or an event and behavior of the head of any member country of the CSTO may never serve for us as a basis to say that Armenia's membership in the CSTO has lost its necessity. This is simply unacceptable.”
“At the same time we will continue to generate lively positive agenda with the North Atlantic Alliance and its member states with the aim of further strengthening of international peace and security. All of these are important factors for neutralizing unfriendly, if not a hostile policy of our other neighbor – Turkey,” the Armenian leader said.
President Sargsyan noted importance of “the recent good news” referring to the agreement reached on Iran's nuclear program. Armenian side has to consistently encourage the parties of this agreement to fulfill their commitments.
Armenia has to contribute to strengthening the non-proliferation of nuclear weapons and other weapons of mass destruction.
“In this regard, of course, we all are concerned about the processes taking place on the Korean peninsula,” he added.
President Sargsyan also noted that Armenia will continue contributing to the strengthening of security and stability, formation of a positive agenda in international relations. Evidence of this is the active participation of Armenia in a number of international peacekeeping initiatives.
