The members of an illegal armed group in Congo decimated two helicopters of the Congolese air forces and took hostages one of the pilots, Soso Osurauli, who is a citizen of Georgia, reports Sputnik Georgia.

The incident is supposed to occur on January 27. Osurauli is a reserve colonel in the Georgian Armed Forces. The rebels require $ 1 million for his release. "On February 22, the Georgian Embassy in Congo warned that an opposition group took hostage a Georgian citizen. The other  pilot is wounded and is undergoing treatment in the city of Goma," the statement reads.

There has been initiated an investigation in Congo. "It is not known why the citizens of Georgia arrived in Congo. As far as we know, they are former soldiers. The situation is complicated because one of them became a hostage of an illegal armed group, "said the foreign ministry. The Georgian Foreign Ministry maintains contacts with the Congolese government to find out the details and protect the rights of its citizen.
