Thousands of residents of Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, went to the streets on Friday, demanding to remove Femida statue from Supreme Court building, installed a few months ago, reports BBC- Russian Service.

The participants of the protest are mostly supporters of conservative Hefazat-e-Islam movement. The action started in one of the city mosques after traditional Friday prayers. The movement leaders warned, that if the authorities do not immediately fulfill their demands, the protests will spread to the other cities of the country as well.

The cause of the complaints is that Hefazat-e-Islam supporters consider, that the installation of the statue is an idolatry. They emphasize, that 92 percent of the country practice Islam, and they will not allow such a disregard of the authorities towards their religion.

However, the majority of Muslims living in the country does not consider the placement of the statue in front of the Supreme Court as a huge problem. The Bangaladeshi authorities have not yet commented on the situation.
