YEREVAN. – Nagorno-Karabakh will not be left defenseless because Armenia is engaged in parliamentary elections, ruling Republican Party of Armenia (RPA) Vice-Chairman Armen Ashotyan stated at a press conference on Monday.

He noted this when asked by Armenian News-NEWS.am regarding the possibility of new border tensions, considering the recent ceasefire violations by Azerbaijan.

In his words, the President of Armenia gave the best response to this question at the recent 11th Congress of the Yerkrapah (Homeland Defenders) Volunteer Union (HDVU).

“The neighbors think that the forthcoming parliamentary elections will divert the people’s and Armenian authorities’ attention from the protection of the borders, leave Nagorno-Karabakh defenseless, and create an opportunity for Azerbaijan to take advantage of our ‘vulnerable’ situation,” stressed Ashotyan. “[But] it’s apparent that our armed forces and entire society are ready to inflict the deserving counter strike.”

The RPA official added that the latest border incidents need to be condemned.

“But, also, these incidents were an opportunity for our armed forces and people to show that domestic issues, the domestic situation cannot divide, divert our attention from priorities, security issues,” noted Armen Ashotyan.
