YEREVAN. – Think about how you can make the Central Electoral Commission (CEC) of Armenia become more reliable.

Head of the Delegation of the European Union (EU) to Armenia, Ambassador Piotr Świtalski, on Thursday noted the abovementioned at a conference on electoral developments in the country.

He stressed that three things about the CEC are important for Armenians. Świtalski noted that although the CEC is effective, the matter at hand is not only effectiveness, but reliability—and not solely regarding the facts, but perceptions.

As per the EU ambassador, representatives of civil society should be included in the CEC. He advised Armenians to think about and study the makeup of the CEC, and, also, to consider how they can make this institution become a more reliable establishment that enjoys public trust.

In Świtalski’s words, no one can say the recent elections in Armenia were perfect, and state that Armenia has reached the level that is necessary and the perfection of democratic standards. But, in his view, this is still a process, and we can say that we are almost half way on this “road,” and it took 25 years to go toward this objective.
