No mass redundancies of teachers will take place as a result of the implementation of school optimization program, Minister of Education and Science of Armenia Levon Mkrtchyan told Armenian News – NEWS.am.

“There will be nothing like mass redundancies. We have stopped at the minimum number of 300 students. If we want to have a result, there should be at least 300 children at school: This can ensure quality. Whereas now we have schools in Yerevan, which are by 30 percent overloaded. If we close down the second shift and allow that contingent to go to unloaded schools, we will achieve the needed result,” the minister said.

In his words, the optimization process will start from Yerevan, where the issue of providing teachers with jobs can be solved easily.

“The teacher will move [to another school] together with the student. We give each school an opportunity to develop by 2020-2022 such a policy, which will allow to have 300 students in the educational institutions by then,” Mkrtchyan noted.

He also assured that everything will be done to avoid mass redundancies, the issue of small number of sackings being solved by provision of compensation in the amount equivalent to their salary for 5-6 months.
