YEREVAN. – The European Union is Russia’s major trade and economic partner, and Moscow cannot be against the economic cooperation between Armenia and EU, Russian analyst Alexander Rahr believes.

Armenia made no abrupt moves from Russia in the direction to EU by signing comprehensive and enhanced partnership agreement in Brussels on November 24, he told Armenian News-NEWS.am.

“Perhaps for Russia everything will change soon, and China will take the place of the EU, but so far, at least according to statistics, it's the European Union,” the expert said, adding that if Moscow itself has trade relations with the EU, it cannot forbid other countries of the post-Soviet space to do the same.

The only thing against which the Kremlin could have tough position, in Rahr’s opinion, is a military alliance between Armenia and the EU, not the economic alliance.

The expert believes Russia, on the whole, is interested in cooperation between the member countries of the Eurasian Economic Union and the EU, as this will contribute to the formation of the partner relations between the two blocs and will help to find common ground in solving many problems.
