Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that U.S. recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital is a ‘red line’ for Muslims and ignoring that would have serious consequences.

Speaking during parliamentary group meeting of his ruling Justice and Development (AK) Party, Erdogan said they would convene an Islamic cooperation summit in Istanbul, if U.S. takes this step, Anadolu agency reported.

“Mr. Trump, Jerusalem is a red line for Muslims. We are imploring the U.S. once again. You cannot take this kind of step,” he said.

Erdogan’s remarks came after several US media said President Donald Trump may recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital this week. He had promised to move the U.S. embassy to Jerusalem during his campaign, and recognizing Jerusalem as the capital could offset disappointment in postponing the move once again.
