An overwhelming majority of Australian House of Representatives voted to change the Marriage Act, approving same-sex marriages, BBC News reported.

“What a day for love, for equality, for respect, Australia has done it,” said Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull.

Australian Governor-General will approve the bill in the coming days. A national poll showed 62% of Australians favoured change.

As reported earlier, Austria's Constitutional Court has already legalized the same-sex marriage. The decision will come into force on December 31, 2018. The Constitutional Court examined a law following a complaint from two women who were refused permission to enter a formal marriage by authorities in Vienna.
