Israeli military and police officers arrested 32 Palestinians during the joint operation, including one of the leaders of the Hamas movement, Sheikh Hassan Yusuf, RBC reports referring to The Times of Israel.

Yusuf is suspected of being involved in the riots. Recently, he was released from administrative arrest.

The Arab-Israeli conflict escalated on December 6, after the U.S. President Donald Trump recognized Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and announced the move of the U.S. embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

Palestine did not accept this decision and said that after this, from a mediator in the conflict, the U.S. turned into its direct participant. In this regard, the Palestinians have promised to abandon the services of Americans as mediators and decided to start looking for another guarantor.

In response to the U.S. decision a series of riots erupted in Palestine. The leaders of the autonomy announced the beginning of a new intifada.

Both Israel and Palestine call Jerusalem their capital. At the same time, Israel declares the city “one and indivisible”, and Palestine continues to consider the eastern sector of the city as its territory and does not recognize the power of Israel over it. The de jure capital of Israel is Tel Aviv.

Since 1992 Hasan Yusuf has been the main speaker of Hamas. The Israeli special services arrested him several times; he served two terms in an Israeli prison and was under administrative arrest for several times. Some members of Hamas accuse him of collaborating with the Shabak (Israeli Security Service).
