Famous activist Islam Marei was sentenced to three years in Egypt for criticizing government's decision to hand two uninhabited Red Sea islands to Saudi Arabia, AP reported.

Activist’s lawyers said Islam Marei had been in custody since his June arrest. Islam Marei was also accused of “funding terrorism” and inciting violence.

The Egyptian-Saudi agreement in 2016 to hand two Red Sea islands to Saudi Arabia raised widespread public criticism and protests in Egypt.  Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah al-Sissi ratified the agreement in June.
