Thousands of people took to the streets to protest in Iraqi Kurdistan. The demonstrators protest over lack of basic services, delayed and reduced salaries, Rudaw reported.

Protests began on Monday in Sulaimani, Halabja and Raniya provinces.  The protest escalated into clashes with security forces in Sulaimani. In the town of Piramagrun, protesters set fire to the buildings of the five largest Kurdish parties.

According to the source, Kurdistan has been suffering from an economic crisis since 2014. The regional government planned to reduce the salaries by 33 percent after the loss of Kirkuk’s oil fields.

Kurdish government has implemented unprecedented austerity measures that mean the suspension of all major government-backed investment projects and the reduction of wages for government employees. The government has said that it will pay back the outstanding amount of the reduced salaries when oil prices rise or the economy stabilizes.
