Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu will personally attend the December 21 session of the UN General Assembly (GA) during which the resolution on Jerusalem, earlier rejected by the Security Council due to the U.S. veto, will be considered. This is reported by TASS with reference to the newspaper Milliyet.

According to it, the head of the Palestinian Foreign Ministry, Riyad Al-Maliki, will also leave for New York.

On December 6, President Donald Trump said that it is time to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of a Jewish state and ordered to move the U.S. embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. On December 18, the United States vetoed a resolution that pointed to the unlawful nature of any decisions “that change or imply a change in the character, status or demographic composition of Jerusalem.” The text called on all states to “refrain from creating diplomatic missions in Jerusalem" and "not to recognize any actions or measures” contradicting to UN decisions.

The United States was the only one of the 15 member countries of the Security Council to vote against the document.

According to the rules existing in the UN, the General Assembly “can take measures in cases of threat to peace, violation of peace or an act of aggression, if the Security Council is unable to act because of the position of one of the permanent members voting against”, the official website of the General Assembly notes. In such cases, an emergency special session is arranged under the formula “Unity for Peace”, drawn up in 1950, at which member states can be recommended “collective measures to maintain or restore international peace and security”.
