Four UN rights experts on Wednesday called on Iran to “immediately” annul the death sentence against Iranian citizen and Swedish resident, Dr. Ahmadreza Jalali, who is accused of espionage for Israel, reported the United Nations Radio.

The four independent experts warned that “the [judicial] procedure against him was marred by numerous reports of due process and fair trial violations.”

Jalali was arrested during a trip to Iran in April 2016.

The physician had been held incommunicado, denied access to a lawyer, held in custody for two months without any charges brought against him, and forced to confess.

On October 21, an Iranian court sentenced Jalali to death, and Iran’s Supreme Court upheld his sentence, earlier this month.

And on December 17, Iranian television aired his confession which, according to experts, was made under torture.

The Iranian government, however, said Ahmadreza Jalali was allowed to communicate with family members.
