On Monday, January 1, 2018, Bulgaria, the poorest country in the European Union (EU), will assume presidency of the Council of the EU for the first time since becoming an EU member in 2007, reported RIA Novosti news agency of Russia.    

Bulgaria has chosen these four priority domains as its EU Council presidency: Deepening of the EU financial and economic integration, EU stability and security, digital economy, and European prospects for the countries in the west of the Balkan Peninsula.
