Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan intends to meet German Chancellor Angela Merkel, said Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu, Bild reported.

According to the source, Erdogan considers two possibilities: either to invite Merkel to Ankara or to visit Germany. Erdogan repeatedly holds telephone conversations with Merkel and German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier.

As reported earlier, Cavusoglu said that Ankara-Berlin relations faced many problems, and both sides want to overcome tension through dialogue.

EU-Turkey relations deteriorated after an armed coup attempt in the summer of 2016: the European Union criticized Turkish authorities’ reaction and decided to suspend accession negotiations with Turkey.

Turkey has the most strained relations with Austria, as Vienna urged to put an end to Turkish accession negotiations, whereas Berlin insists on the review of the EU economic policy regarding Ankara due to the arrests of human rights activists in Turkey.
