Germany and France are ready to renew the Élysée Treaty which was signed 55 years ago, and which laid the foundation for reconciliation and development of close cooperation between the two countries.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Friday stated about the aforementioned during her joint news conference with French President Emmanuel Macron in Paris, reported TASS news agency of Russia.

“In the light of new challenges in the 21st century, I’m happy that we have decided to renew this agreement,” she said.

“German-French friendship and cooperation are always linked to the topic of Europe’s strengthening,” Merkel added. “How can we change Europe in the global world? I believe that will be reflected on the new Élysée Treaty.”
