Michele Nicoletti has been elected the president of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe during the winter session that opened in Strasbour on Monday.
He will serve for a one-year term, which can be renewed once.
Nicoletti will replace Stella Kyriakides from Cyprus who was heading PACE during the previous session.
