YEREVAN. – I, being a citizen of the Republic of Armenia, applied for permanent residence and citizenship in Britain in 2000, when I was relieved of the post of the Ambassador of the Republic of Armenia.

Candidate for the fourth President of Armenia, current Ambassador to UK Armen Sarkissian, on Thursday said the aforementioned at the National Assembly (NA). He noted this when asked about when he had given up his UK citizenship, since Armenia’s presidential candidate cannot be a dual citizen in the past six years.

“That was a step for both security and activity in a sense, since after that, I wasn’t thinking about public service,” Sarkissian explained. “But after gaining [UK] citizenship two years after applying, I actually felt myself a citizen of the Republic of Armenia all those years, [and] which was expressed by my activities, manner, and many other documents.”

He added, however, that the British law on renouncing dual citizenship is a precedent and there are many such precedents.

“I applied [for renouncing UK citizenship] on December 2, 2011,” Armen Sarkissian informed. “And since that day, I’m only a citizen of the Republic of Armenia.”

Debates on the matter of the election of the fourth President of Armenia have kicked off Thursday in the NA.

And the respective voting is slated for Friday.
