Russia and Turkey are to enforce a new demilitarized zone in Syria’s Idlib region, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on Friday.

According to him, the agreement to establish a demilitarized zone is an intermediate step, Interfax reported.

This is an indispensable measure, since it will prevent the shelling from the de-escalation zone i9n the directions of positions of the Syrian troops and the Russian Khmeimim Air Base, he added.

Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan agreed on September 17 to create a demilitarized zone along the line of contact of the armed opposition and government troops in Idlib.
