YEREVAN. – Armenia cannot remain unresponsive to the fate of our compatriots in Syria.

Tigran Balayan, spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) of Armenia, said the aforementioned at Wednesday’s press briefing.

In his words, Armenia’s mission in Syria will be solely humanitarian, and under the Armenian flag.

The mission will comprise specialists, who will conduct humanitarian demining and provide medical assistance in Syria’s Armenian-populated regions, as well as a staff that will ensure the safety of these specialists.

The mission will be implemented in accordance with international law, and based on Syria’s invitation.

“We [Armenia] can’t remain observers,” Balayan added. “There is a great heritage of Armenian culture and community in Syria. Sadly, less than half is left [now] from the [once] 120- to 140-thousand [strong] community. We are obligated to protect our cultural heritage and compatriots.”
