YEREVAN. – The fight against corruption should be a priority for any government here, the German Ambassador to Armenia Matthias Kiesler told Armenian News- NEWS.am.

His remark came during the opening of “Who We Are” exhibition of the famous German artist Herbert Mayer, dedicated to the Day of German Unity.

According to him, to eradicate the corruption it needs a lot of political will.

“So, it is good that the PM said it in April that this would be one of his priorities, and he fulfilled his promises, but I think it would be a long term process, as to eradicate corruption you need a lot of political will first of all and you have to see what you could do with different political institutions and how you could do it. But the first months were very encouraging when we see how the government fights the corruption,” Matthias Kiesler said.

Asked to comment whether the fight against the corruption will attract new investments from Germany, the diplomat said that German investors are very conservative, they need security in all kind of sense.

“As to the physical security, there is hardly any crime in Armenia, it is easy to invest. You need legal security when you go to court and you need independence of judiciary. These are the areas where PM Nikol Pashinyan put a lot of emphasis on, and this is also very important. And, of course, German investors need security. When they are signing a contract, they have to be confident that it would be fulfilled. The environment definitely has been improved. So, we have to see what are the concrete chances for German investors in Armenia,” the Ambassador concluded.
