YEREVAN. – Charges have been brought today against businessman Samvel Mayrapetyan, his attorney on Tuesday told Armenian News-NEWS.am.

“I can’t give details at this moment,” he added. “[But] the charge has nothing to do with the March 1 [2008] case.”

On March 1 and 2, 2008, the then authorities of Armenia used force against the opposition members who were rallying in downtown capital city Yerevan, and against the results of the recent presidential election. Eight demonstrators as well as two servicemen of the internal troops were killed in the clashes. But no one had been brought to account for these deaths, to this day.

Mayrapetyan’s attorney informed that the investigator has filed a petition with the court that the tycoon be remanded in custody. The court will consider this petition.

Samvel Mayrapetyan was detained on October 6.

To note, he is also the owner of a TV company in Armenia.
