Matthew Bryza’s arrival in Baku marks strengthening of U.S. foreign policy not only in the South Caucasus but the entire post-Soviet area, Russian political expert says.

Andrey Areshev claims Bryza has ties in Azerbaijan’s ruling circles, Voice of Russia reported. “Matthew Bryza was an OSCE Minsk Group Co-Chair engaged in resolution of the Karabakh conflict which gave him a key lever to influence domestic political situation in Azerbaijan, as well as other countries of ethnic Caucasus. Mr. Bryza will certainly use the levers holding an official post,” the expert said.

As to Georgia it is a lasting American project. Georgia will definitely keep its head above water despite all difficulties related to global financial crisis, he said, adding that Georgia’s economy will get support.

Newly appointed U.S. Ambassador to Azerbaijan Matthew Bryza arrived in Baku on February 6. Matthew Bryza is a career diplomat, former Co-Chair of the OSCE Minsk Group.  Last December U.S. President Barack Obama announced recess appointments, which include Matt Bryza (to Azerbaijan) and Frank Ricciardone (to Turkey).
