Saudi Arabia has confirmed opposition journalist Jamal Khashoggi’s death at the consulate of Saudi Arabia in Istanbul, Turkey, Reuters reported.

Riyadh said on Saturday preliminary results of investigations showed US-based Khashoggi died in the consulate after a fight with people he met there, state media reported.

“The investigations are still underway and 18 Saudi nationals have been arrested,” a statement from the Saudi public prosecutor said, adding Royal court adviser Saud al-Qahtani and deputy intelligence chief Ahmed Asiri have been sacked from their positions.

But it is not clear who the people were, with whom Khashoggi had a fight.

On October 2, The Washington Post correspondent Jamal Khashoggi had entered the Saudi Arabian consulate in Istanbul to validate documents, but had gone missing. The Turks had argued that he was killed there for writing articles that criticize Riyadh. Saudi Arabia, however, had denied these accusations claiming that the journalist had disappeared after leaving the consulate.
