A 7-year-old Guatemalan girl who crossed the US-Mexico border with her father last week has died after being taken into custody by the US Border Patrol, NBC News reported.

She was apprehended with her father after crossing the border illegally into New Mexico, with her family and more than 160 other migrants.

The girl died of dehydration and shock, more than eight hours after she was arrested by agents near Lordsburg, New Mexico.

She had waited 1.5 hours before receiving emergency medical care after showing symptoms.

Before the group left the Antelope Wells checkpoint by bus to be transferred to a border station, her father reported that she was ill and vomiting. By the time she arrived at the border station 1.5 hours later, she was not breathing.

She was revived twice by emergency workers and then transported by air to a hospital in El Paso, Texas, where she died of cardiac arrest.
