YEREVAN. – Since it’s a geopolitical mess today and a new world order is being formed right before our eyes, we need to think about how the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) should be.

Aram Sargsyan, the chairman of Armenia’s Democratic Party, stated the abovementioned at Monday’s roundtable discussion devoted to the CSTO.

In his words, the guarantees in this organization should be considerable, and partnership relations need to be formed between the member countries—including Armenia.

“Sadly, today we see just the opposite,” Sargsyan added. “I believe that, by taking into account what occurred [recently at the CSTO], changes need to be made [in this organization].”

At the same time, however, the politician stressed that the CSTO member countries communicate more actively and closely with each other on certain matters, especially if it stems from their interests.

But Sargsyan noted that, as a rule, such cooperation is economic, not military, and it is closely linked to further development of the Eurasian Economic Union—in which Armenia is a member, too.

“And in this regard, the interests of those countries are conflicting,” he stressed, and added that their former relations need to be reviewed.

Aram Sargsyan said Armenia does not sense the support it expected from the CSTO, since its member countries’ actions are based solely on their own interests.
