Venice authorities are preparing for the introduction of a new tax for tourists in the amount of 2.5 to 5 euros per visitor, NEWSru.com reported referring to the portal Venezia Radio TV.

The collection called tassa di sbarco - literally tax for the opportunity to go ashore - is planned to apply to passengers of cruise ships arriving at the Marittima terminal relatively close to the historical center of Venice.

The tax is provided for by the draft Italian budget for 2019, the approval of which was accompanied by strong pressure from Brussels due to the initially high levels of the state treasury deficit.

In April 2018, the authorities of Venice began to restrict the flow of tourists to certain areas with a lot of attractions using turnstiles. As explained in the city hall, such a measure will allow to control and direct tourist flows in order to prevent large crowds in certain places.
