The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has kicked off the project to create a recognition system for unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), Wall Street Journal reported

This is an important and positive signal that the Federal Aviation Administration has stepped up efforts in developing rules for the use of drones, said the head of Kittyhawk UAV service company Joshua Ziering.

Without reliable methods for the identification of UAVs and the precise tracking of their routes, the FAA, as well as US law enforcement agencies, refrained from issuing permits to fly such vehicles over a large part of the country.

New rules are expected to be approved within one to two years. As the representative of the FAA noted, the main task is to ensure flight safety.
