YEREVAN. – The Abkhazia and South Ossetia border checkpoints with Georgia could be put into operation by the end of February, according to Zhamanak (Time) newspaper of Armenia.

“The Georgian authorities are creating an interdepartmental commission that shall deal with the implementation of the Georgian-Russian agreement which refers to commodity turnover monitoring at the Abkhazian and Ossetian border checkpoints.

“According to the agreement, the [respective] technical preparation period will last 3 months.

“It can be assumed that after the end of the period—as of the end of February, the border checkpoints will eventually start operating, and [therefore] Armenia’s economy will be relieved of dependence on the Upper Lars checkpoint [on the Georgia-Russia border],” Zhamanak wrote.
