Russia and China on Thursday vetoed a US resolution on Venezuela at the United Nations Security Council, RIA Novosti reported.

Russian Ambassador to the UN, Vassily Nebenzia, stated that if the US-proposed document were adopted, it would have been the first case in history when a legitimate president was removed from office.

The document urged, in particular, to “start a peaceful political process” in Venezuela that would result in “free, fair and credible presidential elections,” and that international observers should be present at these elections, according to Interfax.

The resolution also pointed to the need to deliver humanitarian aid to Venezuela without obstacles.

In addition, the document called for “restoring democracy” in the country.
