China has decided to temporarily shut down its consulate general in İzmir, Turkey, amid tension in Beijing-Ankara relations in connection with Uygurs, Russian News Agency TASS reported citing the respecting statement by the embassy of China in Turkey.

“The Chinese side has decided to temporarily shut down its Izmir General-Consulate as of Feb. 28, 2019,” the statement reads, in particular. “The Chinese side has notified its decision to temporarily shut down its General Consulate in Izmir to the Turkish Government. The Turkish received this situation with understanding. All diplomatic and consular services of the Izmir consulate will be handled by the Chinese embassy [in Ankara].”  

In early February, a Turkish Foreign Ministry official representative had called for the Chinese authorities to release “illegal detainees” and close “concentration camps and prisons.”

Subsequently, and in connection with this call by the Turkish Foreign Ministry representative, Beijing had presented to Ankara the activities of the concentration camps in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region of China, and toward Uyghurs.
