Attempts by Arab countries to restore relations with Syrian President Bashar Assad stumble upon the US resistance, including resorting to threats of sanctions, Washington Post reported, referring to US diplomatic sources.

According to the source, the starting point was the UAE decision, which announced on December 27, 2018 the opening of its embassy in Damascus, which ceased operations in 2011 with the beginning of the conflict in Syria. After that, many other Arab countries also began to show a desire to improve relations with the Syrian President.
