YEREVAN. – Monday is the sixth day that the capital city Yerevan Municipality is continuing dismantling the cafés in the area adjacent to the opera house, at Liberty Square, in downtown of the capital city of Armenia.

The objective is to restore the architectural look and the once-green area of this community-owned territory.

The plan includes not solely landscaping, but also neighboring architectural decoration.

It is noted that an open competition will be held, and the architectural look of this area will be determined.

On February 13, the Yerevan city hall had notified the now former leaseholders of the aforesaid cafés to clear the area by their own efforts.

And the Yerevan Municipality’s dismantling of these cafés began on March 13. But on the next day, these works were accompanied by demonstrations by the employees of these cafés, clashes took place between police and protesters, and several police and civilians were injured.

Also, 22 people were detained, but later released.

And late in the evening on March 14, Mayor Hayk Marutyan stated that all the cafés need to vacate the area neighboring the opera house.
