Over $7 million has been raised online for victims of the Christchurch terror attack, New Zealand Herald reported.

About 70,000 donors flocked to one Givalittle page alone, raising more than $5.4 million for the victims and families of Friday's attack, while a separate LaunchGood fundraising page managed by the NZ Islamic Information Centre had also collected almost $2m.

“We've been overwhelmed with donations - more than we thought possible - and we now need to create more formal processes than would be needed for the much smaller fund we expected this page would create,” Givalittle said in a statement.

“All funds raised are going to be distributed to the families by NZIIC - New Zealand Islamic Information Centre. All proceeds will help with the immediate, short-term needs of the grieving families. No amount of money will bring back their loved ones, but we do hope to lessen their burden in some way,” LaunchGood said in a statement published on its website.

As reported earlier, 50 people were killed and 50 others wounded in a terror attack on two mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand, police announced Sunday.

New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern described the attack on Friday as one of her country's "darkest days.”

An Australian citizen in his late 20s has been charged with murder in connection with the attacks. Two other people were arrested in the immediate aftermath of the shootings.
