The Parliament of Kazakhstan passed the law on renaming Astana, reports Tengrinews.kz.
“The 43 deputies of the Senate and the 103 deputies of the Mazhilis are in favor. Thus, dear colleagues, the historic decision has been adopted,” Chairperson of the Mazhilis (lower house of the Parliament of Kazakhstan) Nurlan Nigmatulin said during the joint session of the parliamentary chambers.
“It is necessary to eternalize the name of our greatest contemporary, first President of the Republic of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev in the following way: our capital must be named after our President. I would like to add that the deputies presented this proposal in a proclamation that was adopted on 23 November 2016 on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of independence of the Republic of Kazakhstan,” Tokayev said after assuming the office of President of Kazakhstan.
