It looks like it’s taking Armenia a long time to become a full-fledged parliamentary country. This is what Deputy of the Prosperous Armenia faction Mikayel Melkumyan declared during the hour of announcements at the National Assembly.

“There are many issues in this regard, but I have been in parliament since 2012 and don’t remember any closed discussion on the multi-profile and various types of relations of the Republic of Armenia with the Republic of Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh Republic). So, I suggest that I organize a closed discussion between the Republic of Armenia and the Republic of Artsakh in the near future. In regard to this, I would also like to stress the fact that no matter which way the foreign policy vector turns, Armenia always needs to be adequately ready for a military-political alliance between Armenia and Artsakh,” he stated.

In the second part of his speech, Melkumyan touched upon the increase of customs duties for automobiles. “Customs duties for automobiles will sharply rise starting from 1 January 2020 as a requirement of the Eurasian Economic Union, but Armenia has work to do. Let’s wait a little and see what initiatives the government will undertake. I would like to reaffirm that Armenia will lose $50,000,000 a year. If Armenia imports more than 100,000 cars this year, and if I multiply at least $500,000 per car by 100,000, I get 500,000,000, and the 10% customs duty is 50 million. I believe this issue will be solved, and the solutions will be political. This is not an economic solution. This is a local issue. So, I believe the Government of the Republic of Armenia needs to be able to negotiate with the relevant advisory board of the of the Eurasian Economic Commission and reach a solution that will be in Armenia’s favor.”
