The acceptability of the Madrid Principles depends on how the OSCE Minsk Group Co-Chairs interpret them. This is what Premier Nikol Pashinyan declared in Armenia’s parliament, responding to Deputy of the Bright Armenia Party Arman Babajanyan’s question.

According to the Prime Minister, Armenia is leading negotiations to solve the issue. “If we’re negotiating to solve the issue, the negotiations need to be based on principles,” Pashinyan said.

Moreover, he emphasized that if the parties don’t understand what the matter is specifically about and what they’re specifically talking about, this will constantly lead to misunderstanding and equivocal interpretations.

The Prime Minister explained that he has several questions about the three principles and six elements that he has preferred not to speak out about until the upcoming negotiations with President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev.

Touching upon the Madrid Principles, he particularly stated that Azerbaijan’s interpretations are unacceptable for Armenia and didn’t rule out the fact that the Co-Chairs might declare that Azerbaijan isn’t interpreting the Madrid Principles correctly.

“How can I say that the Principles are acceptable or not until I understand what the Co-Chairs think about those Principles?” the head of government said.
