The court of Buenos Aires in Argentina issued another sentence to the 88-year-old senator and ex-president, Carlos Menem.

Ex-president sentenced to 45 months in prison for violations of the sale of state-owned property, Buenos Aires Times reported

Former Argentinean economics minister Domingo Cavallo was also sentenced to 3.5 years in prison. The pair were banned for life from holding political positions, the source added.

According to the court order, the Menem government sold the La Rural exhibition center in 1991 for $30 million. At the same time, its market value was at least $131 million. Thus, the damage caused to the state exceeded $100 million.

Lawyers for the accused intend to appeal the decision of the court.

According to the statement, the report says that two more persons involved in the case - Matias Ordonez and Gaston Figueroa sentenced for three years in prison for embezzlement. The rest of the defendants were acquitted.

In 2018, the Chamber of the Federal Cassation Criminal Court confirmed another sentence to Carlos Menem and Domingo Cavallo. The former officials were appointed 4.5 years and 3.5 years of imprisonment for frauds.

In 2013, former President Carlos Menem was sentenced to seven years in prison for involvement in the illegal transfer of weapons to Croatia and Ecuador in 1991-1995. At that time, the countries into which weapons were being delivered were fighting.

The Supreme Court upheld the verdict, but not the punishment imposed by the ex-president. In this regard, his case was sent to the Court of Cassation.

In 2015, Menem was also sentenced to four and a half years in prison for embezzlement. The appeal in this case is considered by a higher authority. From the arrest of the former head of state, who was re-elected senator in October 2017, is saved by parliamentary immunity.
