NATO should not be in Afghanistan longer than expected, and will leave this country together with US troops,  NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said during his address before a joint session of the US Congress on Wednesday.

“We are not going to stay there forever, we do not intend to stay there longer than necessary. We went there together, we will decide on our presence together. When the time comes, we will leave together, ”he said.

“NATO fully supports the Afghan peace process. Peace can be achieved only if the country is freed from terrorists, ”he stressed.

The military operation in Afghanistan has been going on for more than 17 years - since December 2001.

NATO ended its combat mission in Afghanistan in December 2014, leaving a 13,000-strong residual force used for training and counter-terrorism operations.
