Turkey’s purchase of Russian S-400s, which has raised tensions with Washington, is a “done deal” and cannot be canceled, Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said on Thursday.

According to him, Turkey would like to purchase American Patriot systems, but would not refuse a deal with Russia, Reuters reported

He noted that Turkey received a new proposal for the Patriot from the US, which included prices and delivery times, but added that they would negotiate.

“The real problem is this: even today, the United States cannot give guarantees about selling the Patriots to Turkey. Can they give them tomorrow? They can’t guarantee it. Then who will meet my needs?” he said.

Cavusoglu assured that the S-400 will not create any threats to the functioning of NATO systems, including the F-35 fighter jets. According to him, this issue was agreed in advance with the Russian side.

He also noted that Turkey’s relations with Russia are not an alternative to its membership in NATO or its partnership with the European Union.

“We made our choice a long time ago, and now we need to have good relations with everybody and we have to balance that,” he said. “We don’t have to choose between this and that, but we have already made out decision and became a NATO ally,” he added.
