German Chancellor Angela Merkel congratulated Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on his re-election and stressed the need to work toward a two-state solution for the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, Fox News reported.

During a telephone conversation with Netanyahu, Merkel insisted on the continued relevance of the two-state decision, saying that this should be the goal of international efforts. She also expressed her willingness to work closely with the new Israeli government.

At the last stage of his election campaign, Netanyahu promised for the first time to annex parts of the occupied West Bank.
