Notre-Dame Cathedral "will be closed for five to six years" as it recovers from Monday's devastating fire, stated Bishop Patrick Chauvet, AP reported.

Chauvet said a segment of the cathedral has been very weakened by the fire.

He also added that the fate of the 67 people who served and worked in the cathedral remains unclear,  TASS reported.

Earlier, French President Emmanuelle Macron called for the reconstruction of the cathedral in five years.

The fire broke out at around 6:30 pm Monday, and the roof, the clock and spire was damaged. According to preliminary reports, the fire started during the restoration works. The French authorities said large fire has been extinguished.
