YEREVAN. – The Russian border guards at Agarak checkpoint on the border with Iran on Monday prevented an attempt to smuggle narcotic drugs into Armenia.
During border control and vehicle inspection, servicemen from the Meghri border-protection detachment detected 40 pills of methadone and a package containing a dark brown substance—most likely opium—in the personal belongings of an Iranian citizen, press service of the Russian Federal Security Service Border Guard Department in Armenia reported.
These substances are considered narcotic drugs, and their circulation is prohibited under Armenian law.
Driver of the vehicle was handed over to Armenian law enforcement agencies in order to ascertain the circumstances behind this offense.
