YEREVAN. – Zhoghovurd (People) newspaper has learned that the Ministry of Justice of Armenia wants to make amendments to the Judicial Code in order to enable to hold the country’s judges to disciplinary accountability for the rulings by the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR), the paper reported.

“The former Judicial Code has allowed and intended to bring a judge to accountability as a result of ECHR decisions. However, the current Judicial Code does not allow that opportunity, and furthermore, the code says that if five years have passed since the court proceedings and adoption of the judicial act, then disciplinary proceedings cannot be launched. And somehow that circumstance was the reason why in the past, judges [in Armenia] allowed actions and were not afraid of accountability, since a period was set for it,” Zhoghovurd wrote.
