YEREVAN. – I’m a politician, and I’m engaged in politics; I speak with what’s in our state interest. I’m not interested at popularity rating going down, up.

Republic of Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh Republic) former Defense Minister and Defense Army Commander Samvel Babayan on Monday told this to reporters when asked whether he is not concerned that his popularity rating might go down by saying that Armenia’s second President Robert Kocharyan had not given the order to shoot in March 2008, in capital city Yerevan.

Babayan added that he had not said that Kocharyan is a political prisoner.

“There will be the trial, we will express our position,” Babayan noted. “But I haven’t said anywhere that Robert Kocharyan is a political prisoner.”

On March 1 and 2, 2008 the then authorities of Armenia used force against the opposition members who were rallying in downtown Yerevan, and against the results of the presidential election on February 19, 2008. Eight demonstrators as well as two servicemen of the internal troops were killed in the clashes.

Second President Robert Kocharyan is charged with overthrowing the constitutional order in Armenia in connection with the aforesaid events, and taking a particularly large bribe.

The Criminal Court of Appeal overturned the first instance court’s decision on releasing Kocharyan from custody, and it ruled that he be remanded in custody yet again.
